Peter Wächtler
Untitled (Schiffsheck 1 + 2), 2024
Peter Wächtler’s artistic practice encompasses film, painting, drawing, sculpture, and writing. Many of his works share an interest in the formal and affective potentials of the narrative. The two drawings Untitled (Schiffsheck 1) (Ship’s stern 1) and Untitled (Schiffsheck 2) (Ship’s stern 2) originate from a series of sketches for a new video work. Based on the one-point perspective used in computer games and their labyrinthine narratives, sculptures, backdrops, and props were filmed in model scale and in motion (treadmill) for the video work. Wächtler brings together his current interests in still life and abstraction with cinematic approaches to animation and perspective. Somewhere in there is also the academic virtue of using immobile antique busts to hone one’s drawing skills – which is demonstrated in his two Jahresgaben of the stark heroic ornamentation on the stern of old sailing ships in distress.
