OrderThe disguised as penguins and Diorama of bone trees are two of the drawings created by artist Marcela Moraga in 2019 as a result of her stay in Patagonia as part of a research program in 2018. Inspired by diaries and different naturalistic as well as colonialist travelogues of historical expeditions to the southern tip of the Americas, Moraga decided to create her own travelogue of her experience, very different from the historical descriptions. The result is the artist's book Neither spices nor species. Chronicle of Patagonia, which playfully documents the journey in the form of an ancient travel diary with numerous photographs and text. Her drawings depict local myths, penguins, nature, and activist ducks fighting the exploitation of nature in Latin America. In this way, the artist both critically and imaginatively inverts the "explorer_narrative." Moraga juxtaposes the often idealized natural landscape of Patagonia with new fictions and stories that speak speculatively about contemporary realities such as ecological collapse, oral traditions, and science.
