In his work, Julian Irlinger examines past events in order to shed light on future conflicts, using a variety of media and research materials from historical, public, and personal contexts in order to question the construction of historiography. For some time now, the artist has been exploring animated films and collaborating with various animation studios, including Walt Disney. The unique works he created for the Kunstverein Braunschweig are part of his exploration of the US animation studio UPA, which was founded in the 1940s, and Zagreb School of Animated Film, which was established in the 1950s. Both studios are characterized by a minimalist, abstract style and differs considerably from Walt Disney. The appropriation of this distinctive visual language, which children typically internalize at an early age, makes the work appear familiar at first glance. And yet, the anticipation of encountering characters and a clear plot remains unrealized. This contrast between familiar forms and unfulfilled expectations opens up a space for reflection on the construction of narratives and their influence on our perception of history and reality.
