In her conceptual painting, Carlotta Drinkewitz deals with representational systems of art history and combines them into a complex web of references between content and technique. With her annual gift, Drinkewitz refers to the premises of the Kunstverein and its ornamentation and symbolism. The Pompeian meander frieze originates from the staircase of the Kunstverein when it was still a living space and not an exhibition space; it was engraved as a copy into the coated painting ground. Just as the Pompeian wall painting refers to Greek antiquity, the classical rooms of the Kunstverein refer to the discovery of Pompeii. The picture within the picture becomes a reference to its references. The top layer connected painting with the Kunstverein as a space in the exhibition context: during the exhibition Strange Itineraries. Meisterschüler_innen der HBK Braunschweig, the paper was papered over the wall in several layers as a kind of membrane, so that it lent the space a kind of second skin. The paper enclosed the painting under the layers, it was cut out of "the skin" afterwards, the paper layers remained on the painting.
