Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff
Tisch Sieben, 2014/2024

Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff are an artist duo who have worked together for over a decade, developing a practice that is embedded in the founding and running of venues, such as bars and theaters, as sites of social and collaborative artistic work. Rather than documenting the activities that take place there, their works are created on the margins of these places, extracting specific moments or less glamorous by-products, such as financial transactions or worn-out architecture, which become the material of their artistic work. These expanded documentations, using the media of film, photography, sculpture, and literature, raise larger questions about representation, the performative representation of work, and collective memory. The New Theater (2013–2015) served as the generative structure for Henkel and Pitegoff’s Jahresgabe Tisch Sieben, which they ran as a space for performances and shows in Berlin. What we see is a tabletop, presumably after a night of partying, which here serves as a portrait of social relations and of times past. The documentatio nof the actual energy flow of the previous evening is intertwined with fiction: in the specificity of the detail, the work is left open in such a way that it invites us to fill the lived projection surface with our own narratives.
