Bärbel Lange
Sonne, Hummer, Krabbe, 2024
Bärbel Lange’s artistic practice explores the depiction of animals that are seen as guardians of both people and places. Elephants, lions, and bears are her favored four-legged friends, representing strength and protection. Some of the characteristic features of her work are its clear contours, a two-dimensional painting style, and double lines, used both for the outline of an animal and for its inner life and soul. This double line is also immediately recognizable on the hand-painted plates. With this unmistakable style, the line shows not only the outside of the suns, lobsters, and crabs, but also their inner essence. Painted with an underglaze pen, the earthenware plates refer to two themes that are particularly important to the artist’s artistic practice: work and living.
